"The Crown prosecutor got up in the courtroom and asked the judge permission to release the suspect," said CBC reporter Kate McKenna from the Longueuil courthouse.

The Crown offered no explanation why it made the request, and would not comment.

At the time of his arrest Saturday, Longueuil police did not say what charges he would face. They said they believed the suspect acted alone. The man is a resident of Longueuil, but does not live in the neighbourhood where the homicide occurred.

Dalcourt, 23, was attacked last Tuesday while walking along a wooded bike path in Longueuil, Que.
