66-year-old man charged with attempted murder over Port au Port snowmobile incident

Late last month, officers found a man who had fallen from his snowmobile — with injuries they say didn't come from the fall. On Sunday police arrested 66-year-old Wayne Harold Hynes of Port au Port West, and charged him with attempted murder.

Officers have arrested a 66-year-old man and charged him with attempted murder in relation to an unusual case in Port au Port, N.L., according to the RCMP.

The case started late last month, when police began investigating a report of a seriously injured snowmobiler on Gravel's Pond in Port au Port around 4:30 p.m. NT on Feb. 21.

Police said the driver fell off the machine as it stopped, but the injuries he had were not consistent with a fall.

The RCMP's major crimes unit has been involved in the investigation, and on Feb. 25 — just days after the initial report — searched a home on Front Road in Port au Port West.

The RCMP said officers seized "a number of items," but didn't say what they are.

In a news release sent Monday, the RCMP said their major crimes unit arrested Wayne Harold Hynes of Port au Port West at his home on Sunday and charged him with attempted murder, holding him in police custody overnight.

"He appeared in provincial court today, via teleconference, was charged with attempted murder and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance takes place on March 18, 2025," said Monday's statement.

The statement said police are still investigating.
