Police are looking to speak to witnesses of a fatal crash on the Trans-Canada Highway near Butterpot Provincial Park Tuesday afternoon.

The RCMP say it looks like a domino effect led to the multi-vehicle crash Tuesday near Butter Pot Park on the Trans-Canada Highway.

A 52-year-old man was killed.

Five vehicles and 11 people were involved in the series of collisions, which occurred on the TCH southwest of St. John's around 4 p.m. Eastbound lanes were shut down for about seven hours.

The RCMP have not said if the man died because of the pileup, or was killed when his vehicle went off the road.

Cpl. Trevor O'Keefe said it appears the vehicles started hitting each other from behind when a Good Samaritan pulled up to give assistance to the man.

Most of those involved in the accident have been released from hospital.

Police had two accident reconstruction analysts at the scene.

RCMP are asking witnesses to contact the Holyrood detachment with any details of the collision.
