1 in custody as police lift shelter-in-place order near downtown St. John's

One person is in custody following what police called a disturbance involving a potential weapon near downtown St. John's Thursday afternoon.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary issued a shelter-in-place order for the area surrounding Cookstown Road, including Lemarchant Road, Boncloddy Street, and Pennywell Road, at around 2:20 p.m NT Thursday.

RNC director of communications Danielle Barron wrote in an email that information suggested a weapon may be involved.

Police involved in the response had rifles drawn and were sheltering behind vehicles parked on the street and in alleyways between houses, according to photos submitted to CBC News.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after 5 p.m. Police wrote on social media that one person was in custody with charges pending.

Residents can expect officers to remain on scene as the investigation continues.
