The contractor that built the pool in the new Paul Reynolds Community Centre says the City of St. John's owes it nearly five million dollars.

There are few details in a statement of claim filed at Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court on July 19. In it, EllisDon noted it was the general contractor for the construction of the Wedgewood Park Aquatic Centre in the new Paul Reynolds Community Centre and that the company last supplied services to the project on May 29.

EllisDon claims the city has defaulted on its contract and owes the London, Ont.-based company $4.9 million, plus court costs.

This is the second headache involving the new community centre, which opened in June.

Last week, the city announced the facility's gym would be closed until September because of water damage as a result of a problem that happened during construction.

A spokesperson for the city said no one would comment on a matter currently before the courts. The city has 10 days to file a statement of defence.

EllisDon did not respond to requests for comment.
