A man in Springdale says the illegal dumping on land neighbouring his is unsightly and needs to stop, but no one seems to be doing anything about it.

Mike Critch owns land 10 metres from the site where people have dumped everything from shingles to tires, from concrete to the bathroom sink.

According to Critch, the land he owns has been owned by family for more than 100 years, but now a mini-dump is located right next door.

"It's unsightly, it's a mess and there's a lot of people that use this area for recreation purposes and it's becoming more and more popular every year," he said.

"It seems like this dumping has been going on for years now and it doesn't seem like anybody's doing anything to stop it."

The site is located two kilometres outside of Springdale and the town isn't responsible for clean-up and Critch said police won't do anything, either.

A small "no dumping" sign is doing little to deter the litter bugs, despite the fact that the town's free-to-use dump is located just down the road.

Critch said he wants someone from government to step in and clean it up and help get the dumping to stop.

"To put up some more signs and instructions about fines and stuff like that, more signage, some ditches and barricades, that would be a big help," said Critch.

Service NL said it is aware of the issue and will be sending an environmental protection officer to assess the situation and determine who owns the land, as well as attempt to locate the party — or parties — responsible for the dumping.
