Ready, set, NASCAR! Province's first Whelen All-American Series takes off
The inaugural Newfoundland and Labrador NASCAR season kicked off over the weekend.
The province's first Whelen All-American Series race was held on Saturday at Eastbound Speedway in Avondale — the fourth NASCAR hometrack in the country.
"The neatest thing about this place I think is just driving out here, a nice little drive and you come off the exit and you pull up and here's this big castle," said Kevin Nevalainen, the organization's director of racing operations.
"There's no other track like that for sure. I think that's something that certainly stands out."
Twenty-five local drivers took their V-8s out to the track over the weekend.
There are more than 100 NASCAR hometracks in the United States. Locations in Mexico and Europe also host Whelen All-American Series races.
The series is a points championship for NASCAR drivers who compete on sanctioned tracks.
