The mayor-versus-mayor battle for Mount Pearl North is in full swing, as Liberal Randy Simms and PC Steve Kent were both on the campaign trail Saturday.

Simms joined Dwight Ball at the Smitty's Restaurant in the morning, and that afternoon, Kent was with Paul Davis at the Mount Pearl Coffee Matters.

Kent, however, said he spent his morning more productively than his adversary.

"My opponent was drinking coffee this morning and having a good time. I wish him well with that. I'm out knocking doors," Kent said.

"I'm not ready to retire. This is not a retirement gig for me. I'm in it for the long haul."

Both candidates are well known in the district; Simms has been mayor of Mount Pearl since 2007, and Kent was the mayor from 2003 to 2007.

Simms, however, said that he will not be pulling any punches during the race.

"Steve Kent and I, we've known each other for years so there's not going to be a boxing match, there's not going to be a war," said Simms.

"We are going to debate the issues and do it as gentlemen and continue to do that until the end."

Simms also said he doesn't think voters in Mount Pearl North won't be choosing between individuals, so much as they'll be choosing between parties.
