Police are investigating the sudden death of a 30-year-old man after the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a weapons offence in the area of Salter Place in St. John's.

At least three people were taken into custody in the west end neighbourhood early Thursday afternoon during a shelter-in-place order that forced residents to remain in their homes for about two hours.

The deceased man had "injuries consistent with a gunshot wound," according to a news release sent on Thursday afternoon.

Residents of the area were asked to stay inside as the RNC scoured the neighbourhood while responding to what it says were initial reports of a shooting.

Officers, some in tactical gear, were in the area with canine teams. Police were also seen flying a drone over the neighbourhood.

A CBC video producer on the scene saw six people taken into custody. Three were later released. Those who were detained emerged from a residence on Gros Morne Place.

The RNC says officers remain in the area as the investigation continues and is working with the chief medical examiner's office to determine the man's cause of death.

The force says it will not identify the victim at this time and has not yet said whether charges have been laid.

The RNC will be holding a news conference Friday afternoon in St. John's.
