Watton, a lawyer in Toronto, is originally from Corner Brook, the primary community in the Humber West district.
Watton was an advisor to former prime minister Paul Martin.
Vaughn Granter is the Progressive Conservative Party candidate in the district, which was represented by former premier Danny Williams until he resigned from politics before Christmas.
The government has not set a date for the byelection .
