Whitehorse man's scenic skating video a gift for homesick Yukoners

Windy Arm on Yukon's Tagish Lake is developing a reputation as a go-to spot for idyllic winter skating videos. Whitehorse resident Brett Elliot filmed himself and some friends skating at the popular spot about 80 kilometres south of the Yukon capital.

Windy Arm on Yukon's Tagish Lake is developing a reputation as a go-to spot for idyllic winter skating videos.

Whitehorse resident Brett Elliot filmed himself and some friends skating at the popular spot about 80 kilometres south of the Yukon capital.

Elliot said the trip was inspired by a similar video that made the rounds in 2011, showing people playing hockey on crystal clear ice at Windy Arm. When Elliot got word that there were similar conditions there last week, he rounded up some friends to see if they could capture a similar experience.

"Once we got out there there was a little bit of snow on the ice and we were a little disappointed but we decided to go out anyway...and we found the conditions were still excellent," he said. "We decided to do some filming out there just to capture the moment."

A friend even brought some tutus and Elliot filmed the whole thing with an image-stabilized camera, making for a professional look.

When he sent the video to his friends, they urged him to share it more widely. It's racked up more than 4,200 views on Vimeo in a day.

Elliot said he hopes Yukoners who can't be home for the holidays enjoy the video.

"I have friends and family who aren't in Whitehorse for Christmas and I know that sharing that video with them also makes them homesick for Whitehorse," he said. "I just wanted to share that experience that I had with as many people as I could."
