Halifax police have shot a man who pointed a firearm at officers after being barricaded inside a home in the Fairmount area of Halifax since Wednesday evening.

Police say they were called to the home on Arlington Avenue at about 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving a report of a barricaded person.

The man made threats toward police throughout the night, police said in a news release on Thursday morning. Crisis negotiators tried to de-escalate the situation, and the emergency response team was sent to the scene.

At about 7:10 a.m., the man pointed a firearm at police through a window, and in response, a police officer shot him.

The man was taken into custody at 8:35 a.m. and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police say a woman who was known to the man was also inside the house, and police were able to remove her at 8:30 a.m. Paramedics treated her for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident has been reported to the Serious Incident Response Team, the organization that investigates all serious incidents that arise from police actions in Nova Scotia.

SIRT confirmed later Thursday that it is investigating, and that the man's injuries are not life-threatening.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Services Assistant Chief Jim Stymiest said fire crews were called to the scene on Thursday morning in case the occupant of the home set fire to the house.

Power was temporarily cut to the area, affecting 575 customers.

Arlington Avenue reopened to traffic midday on Thursday.
