Six people from Ottawa have been charged with robbery and theft following a smash-and-grab in Cornwall, Ont., on Monday.

Cornwall police said they charged four 16-year-old boys, an 18-year-old and a 24-year-old man with robbery, disguise with intent, mischief and other offences.

The robbery happened shortly after 2 p.m. at a jewlery store in the Cornwall Square shopping mall.

The accused wore hoods and covered their faces to hide their identities, according to a release from Cornwall Police Service.

The suspects used hammers to smash the glass display before stuffing jewlery into garbage bags, the release said.

Police charged all six with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

As the suspects entered a vehicle, they were arrested by Ottawa police officers who were already in the area as part of an ongoing robbery investigation, according to the release. 

The suspects were held in Cornwall pending bail hearings.
