An allegedly impaired driver in Kingston struck a pedestrian who later died on Wednesday evening, according to police.

The driver's eastbound vehicle allegedly crossed westbound lanes before mounting the sidewalk and striking the pedestrian, according to a release from Kingston Police, who responded to the call around 5:30 p.m.

The seriously injured pedestrian was transported to hospital where they later died, police said, without providing further details about their identity.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and detained. Police did not provide further details.

Kingston police are seeking witnesses and the owner of a Tesla who may have dashcam footage.

At approximately 5:25 p.m. the Tesla was stopped in eastbound lanes at a red light at Bath Road and Gardiners Road, when a black Hyundai Elantra "made an illegal manoeuvre at the intersection, narrowly missing the Tesla," police wrote in a press release.
