Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers searched overnight but were unable to find a man who fell off his boat into the Mississippi River on Saturday evening near Appleton, Ont.

Police got the call that the man had fallen into the river around 9 p.m., a spokesperson told CBC.

Officers searched through the night and used a drone Sunday morning, police said. They were unable to find the man but did locate some of his belongings along the shoreline.

An underwater search and recovery team were also called in sometime Sunday morning, OPP said.

The situation is now being considered a recovery mission, OPP said, meaning they believe the man has likely drowned.
