The leader of Green Party of P.E.I. says he is pushing Premier Wade MacLauchlan to call a byelection in the district of Summerside-Wilmot as soon as possible.

Peter Bevan Baker said he's worried if MacLauchlan waits too long to set a date, the byelection will get in the way of another vote on the island: the plebiscite on electoral reform set to be held late October and early November.

"The longer we delay, if this byelection is pushed into October for example, it's going to leave a terribly small window there for Islanders to concentrate on something which is fundamentally important, profoundably important — the plebiscite coming up. So that would be a problem," said Bevan-Baker.

MacLauchlan still hasn't said just when he'll make the call to fill the seat vacated by now former Liberal MLA Janice Sherry.

To date, the Green Party is the only party with a declared candidate for the byelection. Deputy leader Lynne Lund is going to run for the vacant seat on behalf of the party.

The Liberals, Progessive Conservatives and New Democratic Parties are still taking nominations.
