A 43-year-old woman from Summerside has died as the result of a two-vehicle collision on Route 2 in the Wellington Centre area of Prince County Wednesday afternoon.

Cpl. Ellen Peters said East Prince RCMP received a 911 call at about 3:30 p.m. reporting a crash that involved a vehicle swerving into oncoming traffic. When officers arrived, Island EMS and the Miscouche Fire Department were already on the scene.

"The investigation is early. It's still ongoing. At this time, drugs and alcohol are not suspected," Peters told CBC News Thursday.

Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles, which were severely damaged.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

The other driver, a man from Prince County, suffered serious injuries. Firefighters had to extract him from his vehicle, and he was taken to Prince County Hospital for treatment. He remains in critical condition, Peters said.

She added that the RCMP's canine unit was brought in to ensure no other occupants were in the vehicles, as many witnesses had left the scene.

An RCMP collision analyst and a provincial coroner were also called to the scene.
