Sask. woman, 23, charged with manslaughter in Shoal Lake Cree Nation child's death
Karrena Young scheduled to appear Monday in Melfort provincial court

A 23-year-old Pakwaw Lake, Sask., woman charged with manslaughter in the death of a Shoal Lake Cree Nation child last week is scheduled to appear Monday in Melfort provincial court.
RCMP say Karrena Young, the accused, is known to the child, but they did not release further details of the relationship.
Police responded to Shoal Lake Cree Nation, about 100 kilometres east of Nipawin, Sask., at about 7 p.m. CST on Friday, after reports that a child under the age of 10 was seriously injured.
RCMP say officers found the child unresponsive inside a home. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the child was declared dead at the scene.
Police determined the death was suspicious and transferred the investigation to the RCMP's major crimes unit. RCMP said Saturday that an arrest had been made, but didn't specify when.
Shoal Lake Cree Nation Chief Marcel Head said he was unable to comment on the child's death.
"Due to the ongoing investigation of the tragic death of the child, we are waiting for the Carrot River RCMP detachment and the crime scene investigators to share … their information to leadership of Shoal Lake Cree Nation," Head said.
Police have not released further details about the child, including its name, gender or exact age.
RCMP say there is no elevated risk to public safety.
