RCMP haven't detailed relationship between accused and victim

One man is dead and another man has been charged with first-degree murder after a death near Cut Knife, Sask.

RCMP say they got a report on May 31 of a serious assault in a field off Highway 40, just east of Cut Knife, about 170 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.

Upon arrival, officers found an injured man who was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, a news release said.

The dead man has been identified by police as Garnet Whitecalf, 52, from Sweetgrass First Nation.

John Whitecalf, 41, from Sweetgrass First Nation was arrested at the scene and has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. Police have not detailed the relationship between the two men.

He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Monday.
