A woman initially charged with manslaughter in the death of a child on Shoal Lake Cree Nation is now facing a second-degree murder charge, Saskatchewan RCMP say.

Following further investigation and consultation with the Crown, the original manslaughter charge against Karrena Young, 23, of Pakwaw Lake, will be withdrawn at her next court appearance, scheduled for June 26, in Melfort provincial court, police said.

Young was arrested after RCMP responded to a report of a seriously injured child at a home on Shoal Lake Cree Nation on the evening of May 23.

The child was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.

RCMP say the child and Young were known to each other, but no further details about their relationship have been released.
