A stretch of Highway 400 was closed in Vaughan for several hours Thursday morning after a three-vehicle collision where one driver attempted to flee the scene.

The collision happened in the northbound lanes of the highway near Bass Pro Mills Drive at around midnight, said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, spokesperson for the OPP's highway safety division.

The driver of a green van slammed into the back of another van, which then collided with a third vehicle, Schmidt said.

When officers arrived, the driver of the green van tried to run off, but was arrested shortly after by York Regional Police, he said.

The Special Investigations Unit, the province's police watchdog, has been notified about the incident, but haven't said whether they will investigate at this point, Schmidt said.

The driver was taken to hospital where he's currently being attended to by physicians for non life-threatening injuries, Schmidt said. Two other people were also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police believe impaired driving may have been a factor, he said.

The road was reopened just after 9 a.m.
