Ontario's police watchdog says its investigating an incident in North York in which a male suspect was shot by a Toronto police officer.

At 3 p.m., Toronto police say they were called about an incident, which they classified as a stabbing and shooting, in the area of Islington Avenue and Satterly Road.

Police say they arrested four male suspects, including a 17-year-old who was taken to hospital with a gunshot injury to his leg.

The injured suspect is in serious condition, Toronto paramedics say.

Police confirmed an officer was involved in the shooting.

Police did not divulge further details about the incident or any charges that may have been laid. A police investigation is ongoing.

Single gunshot fired by officer prompts SIU investigation

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario's police watchdog, is investigating the incident.

SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette told reporters Sunday evening that Toronto police's gun and gang unit task force was conducting an investigation that led them to approach the occupants of a vehicle on Islington Street.

During a confrontation with the individuals inside, an officer fired a single gunshot, which struck one of the suspects, Denette said. He remains in hospital, in non-life-threatening condition, she said.

Denette said Toronto police are now trying to get a warrant for the vehicle.

"There will be, I presume, more evidence that will be obtained from that vehicle and that will further shed light on what occurred," she said.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual assault.
