A 40-year-old man is dead after being shot multiple times in Mississauga Wednesday, Peel police say.

The shooting happened around 11:53 a.m. in the area of Tranmere Drive and Telford Way, police said in a social media post.

A Peel EMS spokesperson told CBC news that a 40-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds.

Const. Michelle Stafford told reporters at the scene that when officers arrived, they found a man suffering from "obvious signs of trauma."

First responders performed CPR before rushing the man to hospital, where he later died.

"At this point we believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety," Stafford said.

Peel police's homicide bureau has now taken carriage of investigation. Stafford said police don't yet know what led to the shooting, nor do they have suspect descriptions.

"We are in the early stages of our investigation at this time," she said. Officers are now canvassing the area for video footage or any witnesses who might have seen what happened.

"We are urging anyone to come forward and speak with our investigators," Stafford said.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
