A woman in her 20s is in critical condition after a shooting in Scarborough on Thursday night, Toronto police say.

The shooting happened in the area of Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue E. Police said they responded to the sound of gunfire in a commercial plaza.

The woman was being seen wheeled out of a Walmart in the area on a stretcher. She was taken to hospital by paramedics.

One person is in police custody. Police say they are searching for other suspects, who may have fled in a vehicle.

Police said the shooting is separate from a stolen vehicle investigation nearby that resulted in a police-involved shooting.

Residents at the plaza on Friday said they didn't feel safe after hearing news of the shooting — with some saying a stronger police presence might help people feel safer.

Pahirathan Ganeshamurthy said his family regularly visits the plaza.

"It's very scary now. I don't want to come with my family," he said.
