A man is in critical condition and a suspect has been arrested after a stabbing in Kensington Market early Sunday morning, police say.

Officers responded to reports of a person being stabbed around 5 a.m. near Bellevue Avenue and Denison Square, Toronto police said in a post on X.

When they arrived, they found a man in his 30s who had been stabbed multiple times, Acting Insp. Todd Jocko said. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The suspect is a 38-year-old man who fled the scene, Jocko said. He has since been arrested and will be charged.

Jocko said the stabbing was "unprovoked but targeted."

There is no threat to public safety, he said.

Police did not provide information about any relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Roads were closed near the scene but have since reopened, police said. There will be an increased police presence in the area on Sunday, Jocko said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
