A fire in the 1200 block of Ottawa Street Thursday morning displaced eight people from five residential units and caused an estimated $75,000 worth of damage, fire officials say.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators have not ruled out arson as the cause, Windsor Fire and Rescue Services said in a post on X Thursday afternoon.

Multiple emergency vehicles responded Thursday morning to the scene of a fire.

Initial reports that there was a natural gas line break turned out not to be true, a fire service spokesperson said. Instead, the fire damaged a gas meter, causing gas to escape.

Gas service has now been restored, except to the meter that was damaged in the blaze, fire prevention officer John Smith said.

Ottawa was closed for several hours between Langlois and Hall Avenues, the Windsor Police Service said. It has since reopened.
