A man is facing mischief charges after damaging a provincial building, several sheriff vehicles and a local drive-thru east of Edmonton.

More than $1 million of damage was caused to the Vermilion Provincial Building as well as six sheriff vehicles on Sunday, RCMP said.

According to a news release Tuesday, RCMP were called to the building on Buffalo Trail to find a "significant number of windows" smashed on the Vermilion courthouse and public health building.

The six damaged vehicles were parked on site.

Vermilion RCMP, with the help of Kitscoty RCMP and Alberta RCMP police dog services identified and arrested a suspect.

It was later discovered that the suspect had also damaged the drive-thru at the local McDonald's, with an estimated damage pegged at around $50,000.

A 23-year-old man is facing numerous mischief charges.

Alberta's Justice Ministry says on social media that the courthouse is closed until further notice as a result of the vandalism.
