A man in his 60s is dead following a townhouse fire in North York Sunday afternoon, Toronto Police Services said.

Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop said crews were called to the scene near Don Mills Road and Rochefort Drive just after 3 p.m., where they encountered "heavy flame and heat" and forced their way into the back of the building.

"Unfortunately, during their primary search, they did recover one occupant of the building," Jessop said.

"The occupant was immediately removed from the building but unfortunately was pronounced deceased on scene."
