A 29-year-old man has been charged after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman outside a bar in Winnipeg's Windsor Park area on the weekend.
The woman had left the building and was waiting outside for her friend to exit around 12:45 a.m. Saturday when the man, who had also come out of the bar, approached her as she waited, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Tuesday news release.
The man then led the woman to some bushes and sexually assaulted her. After he left, the woman screamed for help until someone assisted her and called 911, police said.
"My understanding is they did not know each other. The victim had not had a conversation or made any contact with him," Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Dani McKinnon said Tuesday.
The woman was taken to hospital for medical treatment and the police service's sex crimes unit was notified, the release said.
Investigators were later able to identify the suspect with help from surveillance video. He was arrested later that evening, police said.
The man, who McKinnon said is living in Saskatchewan and was in Winnipeg for work, was charged with sexual assault. He also had an outstanding warrant from the Canada Border Services Agency, and was detained in custody, the release said.
