RCMP in Fort Smith, N.W.T., say they have charged a 48-year-old man with sexual assault, uttering threats and three firearms offences.

RCMP say they are not naming the man, in order to protect the identity of the victim.

In a news release Wednesday, police said they received a complaint on July 14 that a man had sexually assaulted someone. A subsequent statement they obtained from the alleged victim said the man pointed a firearm at a person during that assault, and at several more people afterward, and fired the gun into the air.

RCMP sent more officers to Fort Smith under Project Guardian. The man was arrested on Tuesday and charged with sexual assault, pointing a firearm, unlawfully possessing a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats.
