Whitehorse RCMP say they're looking for a 25-year-old man after an assault with a weapon in the Hillcrest neighbourhood.

RCMP said on Monday morning that they responded to a report of people fighting inside of a vehicle in the Hillcrest area at 7:53 a.m.

Arriving at the scene, police say they found an individual with non-life-threatening injuries inside a vehicle. Police believe the two people involved in the altercation are known to each other.

For a few hours afterwards, RCMP checkpoints were in place with officers stationed outside of the Hillcrest neighbourhood, asking to look inside vehicles. A dog team could also be seen searching the woods along Hillcrest Drive. By noon, police said they were winding down their search in the area though the suspect had not yet been found.

RCMP describe the suspect as an Indigenous man, wearing light pants and a sleeveless shirt. They say he may be carrying a knife, and they're asking the public to call immediately if they see a person matching the description.

Police say they are currently canvassing the Hillcrest neighbourhood and collecting evidence for the investigation.
