Alaska Highway reopens after fatal collision south of Whitehorse

RCMP responded on Friday to a fatal collision south of the Lewes River bridge that left one person dead and another injured.

Highway was closed for several hours Friday, and reopened to traffic in both directions just after 4 p.m.

The RCMP responded on Friday to a fatal collision south of Whitehorse that left one person dead and another injured. 

The collision happened near the Lewes River bridge, known locally as the blue bridge.

The highway was closed for several hours, and fully reopened to traffic just after 4 p.m.

Sgt. Calista MacLeod said the crash happened about three kilometres south of the bridge. 

She said crews with the Department of Highways and Public Works were on scene with a pilot car.

MacLeod had limited information to share on Friday morning about the crash. Details about the people involved haven't been released.

"This is very early times in the investigation," she said.

"Our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragedy."
