A mother is dead and her child injured following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Milton Saturday, Ontario Provincial Police reported.

The OPP shut down a section of the busy highway near James Snow Parkway for most of Saturday to investigate. The roadway has since reopened.

The crash happened on the eastbound express lanes.

The OPP said it appears a 40-year-old woman from Cambridge,  Ont., was driving when she struck a guard rail and was then hit by a pickup truck around 10:11 a.m.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her six-year-old daughter was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The three people in the pickup truck weren't injured, police said. Police also confirmed a third vehicle was damaged by debris but nobody was hurt.
