A man is dead after a house fire in Scarborough on Friday morning, Toronto police said.

Officers and firefighters responded to the area near Brimley Road and Anson Avenue around 7:30 a.m., police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

One person was found dead inside the house, police said.

The fire has been put out. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The death does not appear to be suspicious, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause, Toronto police spokesperson Viktor Sarudi said in an email to CBC Toronto.

He said the fire was a "small fire that was mostly out by the time emergency crews arrived."

Toronto Fire Services said they did not have information on where the fire started.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the incident, a spokesperson told CBC Toronto.

Victim was a basement tenant, home owner says

Md Abdul Rascal Talukder owns the home. The victim was one of three unrelated tenants who lived in his basement, he said.

Talukder said another tenant knocked on his door around 6:30 a.m. in the morning telling him there was a smell coming from the victim's room.

He said he immediately went to the basement and knocked on the victim's door, calling out to him to ask if everything was alright. He noticed a strong smell, but he was not able to describe it.

After he did not hear a response from the man inside, Talukder called 911.

Talukder said the victim was a man in his 60s. He had been renting the room for over a year.

"I had a very good relationship with this guy," Talukder said. "I'm very sad to hear this matter. I send love to him."
