The provincial police watchdog has confirmed it is investigating a single-vehicle crash in Lakeshore Monday night

Preliminary information suggests an Essex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer tried to pull over a driver for speeding and a license plate violation just before 10 p.m., according to a news release issued Tuesday by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

Shortly thereafter, the vehicle was reportedly involved in a single-vehicle collision on Lakeshore Road 235.

The sole occupant of the vehicle fled on foot, the SIU said.

Police located a 51-year-old woman and arrested her.

She was taken to hospital where she was diagnosed with a serious injury that was not considered to be life-threatening.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police when there is a serious injury, death, allegation of sexual assault or discharge of a firearm, and the incident may have resulted from criminal conduct by an official.

It has assigned two investigators to the case, it said.

It is urging anyone with information about the investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online.

Essex OPP declined to provide further details on the incident because the SIU is investigating.
