Hamilton police say they have charged a driver involved in a crash that killed a City of Hamilton worker.

A 76-year-old Hamilton man has been charged with careless operation causing death.

Police say the crash happened around 10:30 a.m. on April 4 on Golf Links Road, between Martindale Crescent and Legend Court. According to police and the City of Hamilton, two public works employees were doing road work in the curb lane when they were struck by a white Infiniti sedan travelling westbound.

Nabil El-Ahmed, 55, was pronounced dead. A second worker, 43, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The collision closed the road for several hours and prompted an outpouring of grief from city leaders.

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said she was "deeply saddened" by the loss of a city employee and extended condolences to those affected. Other councillors, including Craig Cassar, Cameron Kroetsch, and John-Paul Danko, also shared their sympathies.

Flags were lowered to half-mast at city hall and at the workers' job sites in tribute.
