A 10-year-old child has died after a three-vehicle collision in Hamilton on Sunday, police say.

The crash happened at 9:30 p.m. on Trinity Church Road near Guyatt Road in the rural south end of the city, said police in a news release Monday.

A GMC Sierra pickup truck was driving southbound "at a high rate of speed" and crossed the centre line trying to pass another vehicle, police said. It collided head on with a northbound Honda Civic.

"The impact propelled the Civic backward into the path of a northbound Ford Explorer, causing a secondary collision," said police.

The Explorer ended up in a ditch on the side of the road.

The Civic's four occupants were injured and one of them, a 10-year-old child, was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

"Hamilton Police offer heartfelt sympathies to those affected by this devastating incident," police said in the release. "We are keeping the victims and their families in our thoughts."

At the time of the news release Monday, another passenger was in life-threatening condition, a third was in critical condition and a fourth suffered minor injuries, along with the three occupants of the pickup truck.

The collision reconstruction unit is investigating.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage from the area around the time of the collision is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
