The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary did not lay any charges in what it called a "possible weapons offence" that took place in the west end of St. John's on Sunday night.

After reports of several gunshots, police ordered residents in the area of Thorburn Road between Prince Philip Drive and O'Leary Avenue to shelter in place until they contained a property.

By 10:50 p.m. NT Sunday night, police contained the matter to a single residence on Thorburn Road.

Police say they found what "appeared to be an assault rifle," but was later identified as a BB gun, according to a statement on Monday.

The RNC's tactical unit was on the scene, among other units.

Two people were taken into custody and were released without charges and the RNC is still investigating.
