Five people were arrested early Wednesday morning when police searched a central Halifax residence as part of an ongoing weapons investigation.

Officers conducted the search in the 6000 block of Allan Street shortly before 5 a.m. AT, Halifax Regional Police said in a news release.

No weapons were located during the search and four of the five people were later released, police spokesperson Const. John MacLeod said. The other person remained in custody in relation to a separate investigation, he said.

Nearby residents reported on social media they had heard sirens and at least one loud shot, but MacLeod said no firearms were discharged. He added that police did make use of sensory irritants.

He said police also seized property from the residence.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are anticipated, the release said.
