The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it's investigating after human remains were found near a trail in St. John's.

In a news release, the RNC said it responded to a report of a deceased person located in a small clearing near the Three Pond Barrens trail near Pippy Park around 1:30 p.m. NT on Wednesday.

The RNC said officers were accompanied by paramedics, and confirmed the human remains.

The RNC criminal investigation division was deployed to conduct an investigation.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, supported by Memorial University's anthropology department, are conducting an analysis of the remains.

The person has not yet been identified, but is believed to be male, the RNC said.

Police say there is no risk to public safety, and the death is not believed to be suspicious.
