A seven-year-old boy who was hit by an SUV while riding his bicycle in a St. John's neighbourhood has died.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to the crash around 6:45 p.m. N.T. Monday, in the Montague Street and Watson Street area.

RNC Constable James Cadigan said the boy was critically injured when he was hit by the vehicle and first responders took him to the hospital in critical condition.

Cadigan confirmed to reporters that the boy died Wednesday as a result of those injuries.

"We want to send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young boy. This is a tremendously tragic event," he said.

In a news release sent Thursday morning, the RNC said the driver of the SUV, who was travelling on Montague Street, stayed at the scene.

"At this stage in the investigation, the operator of the vehicle involved in this collision, we have found no wrongdoing on their part. The investigation does continue and we continue to reach out for any witnesses or video that may be connected to this event," said Cadigan.

The RNC is urging anyone who needs support to reach out to someone they trust or call 811 for guidance.
