A 15-year-old is dead after police say the vehicle they were driving crashed into a power pole and then a large tree in Stellarton, N.S., early Thursday morning.

Stellarton police Sgt. Paul Veenhuis said late in the morning that officers were still seeking insight into why someone so young was behind the wheel.

Police were called to the scene on Bridge Avenue at 4:15 a.m. local time. The crash may have been caused by high speed, Veenhuis said, although he cautioned that an RCMP accident reconstruction unit was still examining the scene.

"We're still very early in the investigation stage here," he said.

The teenage driver died at the scene. Veenhuis could not say if anybody else was in the vehicle.
